All right, what's up
0:02
I'm going to go over how many keywords you should use in your content
0:06
I bet we'll have a few people in the chat. Do let me know if you could hear me. I'm just going to roll with it
0:11
I got an email early this morning and it said, I saw a video about how many keywords to use and I'm wondering
0:19
is that per piece of content? I saw other videos where people said to use four to nine keywords and John
0:27
as a person who sent it in. Thank you, John, by the way, said, how many keywords should I use
0:33
How many should I target per piece of content? So I'm going to go over two main pieces of content, and the answer, by the way, is probably
0:43
going to be a little bit unsatisfying. All right. Justin's on, what's up
0:47
Good to see you, buddy. You're going to have to give me a shout. And this is going to be one of the shorter form videos
0:53
I'm going to try and get to the point a little bit faster. By the way, if you're interested in longer form videos, Q&A, that'll be Friday
1:01
It'll be tomorrow at 10 a.m. So if you happen to catch this in the next 18 hours, you'll be able to check that out
1:08
So here's the deal with keywords. So I don't think about it too much, all right
1:15
I don't think about it too much. Here are the two pieces of content that I'll talk about
1:20
So one is keyword golden ratio content. If you don't know what the keyword golden ratio is, basically it's a data-driven way to find keywords that are underserved on the internet
1:30
You can check out some other videos on that. If you just search for it, you'll find several of them
1:36
So for a keyword golden ratio piece of content, I'm only targeting one keyword, whatever the KGR term is
1:44
Usually it's some sort of long term, a long phrase where maybe it's like best pen for journaling, something like
1:52
that. So I would just use that as the title or something really close to that as the title
1:58
and then write the article as you need to, right? Whatever you're trying to cover, you write the
2:04
article. How many keywords am I going to rank for that particular page? It'll be a lot more
2:12
than just the one keyword that I'm targeting. There are probably dozens of long tail keywords
2:18
that I may rank for if someone searches for something similar, like, for example, best pen for
2:25
journaling if you writing underwater all right Something really obscure I may rank for that as well because maybe I mentioned underwater in there It doesn make sense but that doesn matter for our example So in case number one keyword golden ratio content I recommend you just go after one keyword
2:44
That's the point of the keyword golden ratio. Don't try and shove two or three keyword golden ratio turns into that
2:52
It's not going to work out as well as you think. Now, that is an approach that you may be able to look at
2:58
However, I don't necessarily recommend it. The other kind of content is going to be like longer form content, and that is going to be
3:06
stuff that is not KGR compliant. You're using the keyword golden ratio
3:12
You're just writing content. You can pick, you know, a handful of keywords that are maybe related
3:18
Maybe you pick like a gel pen and then like a fountain pen and you want to write an article
3:25
where you're kind of targeting two terms, bad example, but I use pens a lot
3:28
because they're just right in front of me, you can target two terms if you would like to
3:35
and write about those two items or products or whatever it is, provide the information and value
3:42
you need to for your audience. And then from there, again, you're targeting two keywords, but most likely you're going to
3:49
rank for all sorts of long-tailed keywords. Now, what does this like sort of mean
3:55
On a grand scale, if you think about the visitors. the searcher out there who is trying to find information, you'll be able to try and help them
4:06
If you're thinking about the visitor and how you could help them, the information they're looking
4:11
for, the problem they're trying to solve, the pain they're trying to get rid of, if you take
4:16
care of that, you'll be in good shape. So if you have that in the back of your mind, you'll be
4:21
okay. Now, if you are looking at it, you know, from a strategic standpoint, you're thinking
4:28
Well, I want to maximize email of keywords that I can rank for in that article
4:35
It'll lead to short-term potentially bad decisions. It's not necessarily bad, but there's a chance that you may end up taking, you know
4:47
an article that could be good and valuable and then making it a little bit weird
4:53
You may end up stuffing keywords into that article so that it's just not going to rank
4:58
won know what going on because you were just trying to put in you know nine to 12 keywords like some person said but maybe it out of context and that sort of thing So my overall point is if you have the visitor in mind and try to solve their problem
5:17
that is the best route to go. So for me, I don't try to figure out how many keywords I'm going to try and rank for or anything
5:26
like that. I have a keyword in mind and then I'll ask a writer to write it
5:31
I don't give them any guidelines about using keywords. I don't tell them anything
5:37
In fact, if someone has SEO writer in their credentials or resume, I don't hire them
5:44
I literally stay away from someone who says that they're an SEO writer because I don't know
5:49
if they know what they're talking about. And I may end up with like a piece of content that, you know, should have been published
5:57
in 2005. It's stuffed with keywords. and they're using, you know, very strange phrasing just to use keywords because they think
6:05
that's what I want. So that's my overall point for today. If you're new to the channel, I'm Doug Cunnington and talk about Amazon affiliate sites a lot
6:13
and project management, general internet marketing. I do a live Q&A, usually on Fridays, although I think I may move that to Thursdays moving
6:22
forward to maybe take Fridays off. We'll see how it goes. But tomorrow, I'm actually going to do a Q&A
6:28
I see we have Mark in there. We have Allwayne. We have Curious Devil, what's going on in Duke, Kind Moderator
6:38
And then we have a couple random questions, but I'm a nice guy
6:45
I'm going to go ahead and answer them here. All Wayne says, since the Google update, most of my KGR posts move from page one to page five
6:55
And trust me, they're high quality. Okay. That's not really a question. statement, but Alwayne, I think you're maybe asking me what I think. So in general, I haven't
7:06
gathered like a ton of data on the new update, but per my understanding, I've heard it has to do
7:14
with some sites that maybe cover like medical related terms or other terms where the authority
7:21
and or the expertise of the site is important. So I don't know if yours falls into that. I'm
7:27
not sure However Duke has a good suggestion It says compare the new top pages to your page Look at the keyword density and where they placed And literally that is Duke that the same exact answer that I gave to some people when you doing this sort of ysis
7:47
You have to look at the data that we have available. So the best data that you have is literally the results that are now in Google
7:52
So you could totally reverse engineer what they've done. This is something you should probably be doing when you're writing content anyway where you take a look at the keyword density, look at the subheadings
8:06
images are they using? Are they using? What are the captions like? How many outbound links do they have? How many inbound links do they have internal from their site? How many inbound links are external from their site? And all the data that you could possibly get. All that stuff is important. And you may even check out a tool like similar web where they can give you some metrics about the site in general. Now those are just pure estimations. They don't know all that data, but you may be able to see that
8:36
Well, people are spending like five minutes on that site and all the other sites on
8:41
is reported on a similar web. And then you can like go ahead and, I mean, there's not much you could do with the time on site
8:51
other than take that data and look and see like, is everybody on the front page
8:55
Like, are they over three minutes? And everybody on the second page is like less than a minute, something like that
9:02
Curious devil says, any semarch alternative tool to find competitors keywords. Yeah, there's tons of
9:06
of them out there. You can use AHRFs is one I would recommend. It's more expensive, but I think
9:12
it's a stronger tool for an all-around SEO tool. Jill Zon says, I have a new background. Yeah
9:21
so I'm sitting on the kitchen table today. I talk about the guest room that I use as my office
9:27
or vice versa. And actually, we have guests coming in. So as soon as I shut this down here
9:34
I'm going to be cleaning up because my in-laws are coming in town tomorrow
9:39
All right. So that's why I'm sitting over here. All right. Thanks everybody for watching
9:46
And I am, I think I'm just going to cut it short right at the 10 minute mark
9:51
Don't forget, I'm going live tomorrow to answer your questions, normal Q&A
9:56
So if you do have questions, leave them as a comment here. I'll take a look and I'll actually sort of be scouring the questions out there
10:04
or as comments just to answer them tomorrow. So thanks, everybody. Hope you're having a good week and we'll check you out tomorrow
10:12
Thanks
